Common Dog Poisons at Christmas

Chocolate

Chocolate poisoning in dogs is the type of poisoning most commonly reported to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service. Chocolate contains a powerful stimulant called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine.

Signs of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, hyperactivity, high temperature and blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm and tremors.

If you suspect that your dog has been exposed to this poison seek veterinary care immediately. Some dogs may require rehydration and other veterinary treatment.

Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants

Any quantity of these fruits can be toxic to dogs. Cooking or baking them (e.g. in cakes) does not reduce the risk of poisoning.

Poisoning may initially result in vomiting and diarrhoea and subsequently in kidney failure (which may occur a few days after the initial effects)

Please contact the surgery urgently if you suspect that your dog has been exposed to this poison.

At Christmas please remember to watch out for food items that contain the following

Chocolate

Grapes, raisins, sultanas and or currants

Peanuts

Onions, garlic, leeks

Xylitol (an artificial sweetener)

Macadamia nuts

And also remember that chocolate is also toxic to other species including cats, rodents and rabbits.

If at any time over the festive period you are concerned about your animals’ health please contact us at the surgery. If we are closed telephone the surgery and you will be given another number to call, they will contact the vet on call who will phone you back. Sometimes advice is all that is needed and the vet is happy to give this over the phone or they will arrange to see your animal either at the surgery or at home depending on the concern.

WAIST WATCHERS!

Like us our pets can easily put on some extra weight over the festive season. Mindless nibbling for us equates to us just giving our beloved pet the ‘odd’ treat! With extra people at home over the festive season and visitors popping in our pets usually receive a little more treats than normal. Whilst it is nice to be able to give these treats, like us it just makes for some hard work come the New Year to get the extra weight off again.

So please can we ask that you keep an eye on how much extra your pet is getting, perhaps ask the household to nominate one or two people who are allowed to give treats to your pet and kindly ask visitors to refrain.

During the festive season one of the most popular reasons for seeing an animal is sickness and diarrhoea usually from overeating rich foods, if this happens to be when we are closed this can be costly for you.

Santa Paws!

We have a selection of Christmas toys and treats for both dogs and cats in stock.

We will not be able to re order any of the Christmas stock so once it’s gone, it’s gone!

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR
