We would also like to take this opportunity to remind our client that, although its fun to involve our pets in the festivities, that many things we enjoy at Christmas are harmful to our pets including :
  • Chocolate
  • Grapes, Raisins, Currants and Sultanas
  • Peanuts and Macadamia Nuts
  • Onions, Garlic and Leeks
  • Xylitol (Sweetener found in some chewing gums, medicinal products and artificial sweeteners)
  • Alcohol
  • Mouldy or Spoilt Foods
  • Chicken or Turkey Bones
  • Holly, Ivy, Poinsettia, Yew, Mistletoe and Lilies
So please be careful during the festive season so that it is enjoyable for you and your pets!

PET DIABETES MONTH

November 2011 is Pet Diabetes Month. It is estimated that as many as one in 200 pets suffer from this condition. It is often associated with getting older, putting on weight and not being active. If diabetes is left untreated it can cause serious illness in your pet and even premature death. However, once diagnosed diabetes in cats and dogs is usually relatively easy to treat and manage. If you are at all worried about your pet please contact the surgery.

EQUINE FLU

We have recently been informed that a case of Equine Flu has been diagnosed in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. We recommend that any horses being brought to Orkney or travelling South should be protected against this debilitating disease to prevent it spreading. Please call the surgery if you would like any more information.

OUR CELEBRITY DOG!

Many of you will have met (or heard about) Jennifer's Border Terrier, Murray. Well now he's not only famous at Flett and Carmichael but has made it into the October edition of Your Dog Magazine! Jennifer tells readers of how Murray has a Facebook account and talks with all his other doggie friends everyday. He is also featured in a column which is written by an Orcadian man called "Diary of a Countryman" as he greets him at the reception desk.  We are all very proud of Murray and are asking for paw-tographs now!!

POST OP SHIRTS

After operations animals sometimes had to wear Elizabethan collars (that "bucket over the head") to stop them from interfering with their surgical wound sites. We have been using a new alternative - specially designed dog or cat coats in a wide size range, which are stretchy, comfortable and easily washed, and in many cases make the whole experience of after surgery care much easier to cope with!

We now stock this award winning range of doggy shampoos to keep your pooch clean and fresh. Choose from "Flea & Tick", "Puppy Love", "Dogs Body", "Stink Bomb", "Dirty Dawg", "White Wash", "Puppy Fresh" and "Mucky Pup".
